 Can You Believe It’s Labor Day Already?

Although Labor Day was begun as a celebration of the labor movement and its achievements, in our time it has come to be celebrated as the last, long summer weekend before autumn. We hope your summer was all that you wanted it to be. We also want to remind you of the holiday’s beginnings.

The average American in the late 1800s worked 12-hour days, seven days a week in order to make a basic living. Children also worked, causing the neglect of their educations and creating danger to their health and safety.

With the long hours and terrible working conditions, American unions became more prominent and voiced their demands for a better way of life. On Tuesday September 5, 1882, 10,000 workers marched from city hall to Union Square in New York City , holding the first-ever Labor Day parade. Participants took an unpaid day-off to express their pride as workers and to bring attention to their struggle to provide for themselves and their families. As years passed, more states began to hold these parades, but Congress would not legalize the holiday until 12 years later.

 The Toy Box Presents Reiki Master O’Clair Alexander

A Reiki Healing Treatment could be exactly what you need. Reiki is a Japanese healing art that works for the Body, Mind and Spirit. It assists in balancing your life energy force by flowing to where support is most needed for optimum wellness.

 You Can Be a Vending Volunteer

As you know we like to break the confines of our four walls as often as possible. It’s just so much fun to get out and meet all the wonderful people that attend such great events as Southern Comfort, Dom Con, and Pagan Pride. If you have a desire to be a part of our Out-and-About experience we want you to consider becoming one of our vending volunteers. Our vending volunteers might help us transport our goodies to the venue, help set up, staff the table, or help break down. In gratitude for your help we will pay your admission to the event or get you a vending pass.

New Dance Classes on the Schedule

It’s been a while in the making but our Hip Hop Pole class is ready for you. We have taken the pole and given it a twist with hip hop music and dance moves. It’s only $20 for the class so you can’t go wrong.

We’ve also added a Private Dancer class that is an intensive workshop for professional dancers and those who want to work it like a pro.  At the completion of this 5 week class you will be proficient in exotic dance and basic pole dancing. Each class is 90 minutes long and the cost is $250 for the course.

It’s that time of year again and the students are making their way back to the area’s many campuses. We want to welcome you back with a sale to say how much we appreciate that students come and spend their very valuable dollars with.

The Stephen Program Feeds Those In Need

We became aware of the Stephen Program through our friend Barry who volunteers with them every month (many of you have had the pleasure of meeting him here in the Toy Box). Through this community food pantry anyone, really anyone, who is unable to provide food for themselves and their loved ones can get enough food for approximately ten meals.

This program is a joint venture of Emory and Rehoboth Presbyterian Churches and is located at 2729 Lawrenceville Highway in Decatur , GA 30033 . We are proud to do our small part to help them help those who are in need. We have a donation container at the check out desk. And, many of you have already given very generously. You can also send a check directly to them made out to The Stephen Program, Inc. We thank you all for your generous hearts.
